A coffee with Guy Daws

Today, we want to introduce you to Guy Daws. Guy is originally from Yorkshire Dales (UK) and since 2019 House Tutor at our boarding house Traube as well as a Guitar Teacher in our Instrumental Teaching Programme (ITP). His two passions are music and sport. Thus, it is not a surprise that he studied music, recorded his songs, and worked as a snowboard instructor in the Japanese mountains. Currently, he is studying a teaching qualification at the University of Nottingham to become a qualified Music teacher.

Guy, can you tell us why you decided to become a House Tutor at StGIS?
When I used to be a student, I went to a boarding school as well. During that time, I made wonderful, long-lasting friendships and got inspired by our incredible house parent. He became like a father to me and showed me what kind of impact you can have on young people in that role. After my studies and several years in the music industry, I recognized that something was lacking for me. I was searching for a new challenge and remembered my house parent. Finally, I decided that I want to care for others as he cared for me.

What are the things you want to teach the boarding students as their tutor?
I believe that leadership is an action, not a role. Thus, the most important things that I want to convey are respect for the house, each other, and your surroundings. I want to create a team spirit and integrity in the house.

How can you bring your experiences and passions to the table in the school?
On the one hand, as the music program at StGIS is steadily growing, I can support with my experiences to instruct the kids to become real-life musicians one day if they want to. On the other hand, regarding sport, I am the snowboard instructor during the skiing trips on the weekend. Thereby, I could also learn a lot from my colleague Thomas Kukla who inspires me with his background and qualifications.

Do you have a life motto?
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.

What is your favorite place at StGIS and why?
My favorite place is the Ratz, our music building. Its acoustics and the possibility to overlook the lake make it such a beautiful, creative, and inspiring spot, especially for a musician!

What makes StGIS special for you?
The community and its inspiring educators!
